The planet walk was initiated by the Christiaan Huygens weather and astronomy association and was designed, prepared and realized in 2014 by Arno Hol and Frans Rodenburg (both members of the association).
The official opening took place on 14 June 2014 by the well-known science journalist Govert Schilling.
The start and end of the walk is on the right next to the Nature and Birdwatcher Alblasserwaard building (NVWA, also clubhouse of the association) on Matenaweg 1 in Papendrecht.
During opening hours, additional information about the planetary walk can be obtained in the building of the NVWA.
Here you can drink a drink for a small fee and whether or not a snack.
The planet walk is approximately 4 km.
long and leads as much as possible on the existing hiking trails through the Alblasserbos, which forest is owned by Staatsbosbeheer.
The route is extra paved where necessary, so that it is also accessible for the disabled as much as possible.
Along the route, in relation to the actual distances in our solar system, information is given in the form of images and a QR code at the bottom of the images.
Every step you take during the walk corresponds to 1 million km.
in the solar system.
The walk starts with the image of the Sun and runs through the images of the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Asteroid Belt, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus to the 8th and outer planet Neptunes.
Three artists were engaged to design the images, namely:
Rieke van der Stoep:
Mieke de Waal and
Jolanda Riedijk,
who each designed three images of the Sun and the eight planets, respectively, based on mythology.
The walk has not only become a nature walk, but also an astronomical and art walk.
The images are made of corten steel, because this material is sturdy and durable, fits in with nature and contrasts beautifully with the green of the trees and plants along the planetary walk.
The images are firmly placed on concrete foundations.
The app functions via Google Maps with GPS and will automatically activate the vibration function when opening an image and open a screen with information.
After this, an audio file will also start automatically.
It is possible to stop this audio file to make another choice, such as reading the text of the audio file yourself or scanning the QR code at the image.
This is done by pressing the triangle behind the option, which opens the screen with extra functions and information.
By pressing the same triangle the screen closes again.
Via the option Scan QR code, smartphone users can scan the QR code with the image and directly view additional information on the Internet.
When you have seen and / or listened to the information, you can continue the walkway and the information screen of the relevant image will close after a while.
The app.
will guide you further to the next image.
We wish you a lot of pleasure during this walk.
