Sundanese (Basa Sunda, Sundanese script: , Cacarakan: ) is a language from the Malay-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family.
This language is spoken by at least 42 million people and is the second most spoken mother tongue in Indonesia after Javanese.
Sundanese is spoken in almost all provinces of West Java and Banten, as well as in the western region of Central Java starting from Brebes River (Cipamali River) in Brebes Regency and Serayu River (Cisarayu River) in Cilacap Regency, in parts of Jakarta, as well as in all provinces in Indonesia and abroad which are the urbanized areas of the Sundanese people.
From a linguistic point of view, together with the Baduy language, Sundanese forms a Sundanese language family that is included in the Malay-Sumbawa language family.
Sundanese dialects (basa wewengkon) vary, from the Sundanese-Banten dialect, to the Sundanese-Middle Javanese dialect, which is starting to mix Javanese.
Linguists usually distinguish six different dialects.
These dialects are:
Western dialect (Banten language), all regions of Lebak and Pandeglang Regencies.
(except Tangerang district, Tangerang city and South Tangerang)
North Dialect, southern parts of Bogor, Karawang, Subang, Purwakarta and Bogor cities (except for the northern part of Bogor district, Bekasi regency and city and Depok city)
Southern Dialect (Priangan), Bandung Raya (Bandung and West Bandung districts, Bandung city and Cimahi), Cianjur district, Sukabumi district and Sukabumi, Sumedang, Garut districts, Tasikmalaya districts and Tasikmalaya cities.
Middle East dialect, Majalengka district and southern parts of Indramayu district
Northeast dialect, (including Cirebon Sundanese): Kuningan district, southern part of Cirebon district, western part of Brebes district (Central Java)
Southeast Dialect, Ciamis Regency, Pangandaran Regency and Banjar City, Cilacap Regency, and the western part of Banyumas Regency (Central Java)
The Western dialect is spoken in the Banten area.
The Northern dialect covers the northern Sundanese area including the city of Bogor and parts of the Pantura area.
Then the Southern dialect is the Priangan dialect which includes the city of Bandung and its surroundings.
Meanwhile, the Middle East dialect is the dialect around Majalengka Regency and parts of Indramayu Regency.
The Northeast Dialect is a dialect around Cirebon Regency, Kuningan Regency as well as parts of Brebes Regency and Tegal Regency in Central Java.
And finally the Southeast dialect is the dialect around Ciamis Regency as well as Cilacap Regency, Brebes Regency and Banyumas Regency in Central Java.
Old Sundanese is a form of Sundanese which is found in several written records, both on stone (inscriptions) and on dry leaf sheets (lontar).
It is not known whether this language was a separate dialect or a form that preceded modern Sundanese.
