It's a fantastic device and the rear screen adds a fun element to a seriously, beastly phone but I found it ridiculous that Xiaomi completely cut off access to any other apps besides their own when it comes to allowing notifications on the rear screen.
No more! I created my own app that allows you to select any app on your device to send notifications to the rear screen.

Bugs/Concerns:
With the newest update, the Always on Display activity on your rear screen can now use a foreground service to keep the activity from being killed by the system (like MIUI's system app).
I was having issues with this before, but I believe it's working much better.
